Stephen King, 5 Other Detectives Save Man's Life At Hudson County Prosecutor's Office

When a man became unresponsive at a Hudson County office in Jersey City, 6 detectives from 2 law enforcement agencies sprang into action.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — When a man became unresponsive at a Hudson County office in Jersey City on Thursday morning, 6 detectives sprang into action.

According to the office of Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, five detectives with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and a Jersey City Police Department detective are credited with saving the life of the man who was visiting the office on April 11.

"Shortly after 9 a.m., an individual became unresponsive while in the lobby area on the sixth floor of the Hudson County Administration Building," the Prosecutor's Office said in a release on Monday.

They added, "Detective Stephen King, Detective Salvatore Benanti, and Jersey City Detective Scott Rogers found the individual did not have a pulse. Detective Risheem Whitten, Detective Kristen Mikulak, and Detective Daniel Bellini quickly joined their colleagues to provide immediate, life-saving medical assistance."

Within minutes, the person regained a pulse and was taken by emergency medical services to Jersey City Medical Center for additional treatment, prosecutors said.

“Saving a life can be one of the biggest accomplishments in a law enforcement career. It requires bravery, quick thinking, immediate action, and the application of training and experience,” said Captain Javier Toro, the detectives’ supervising captain.

“In medical emergencies, such as this, mere seconds can determine the outcome of the situation,” said Prosecutor Esther Suarez. “Each of these detectives demonstrated professionalism and utilized their training to ensure this individual received necessary and life-saving treatment. I am immensely proud of their quick response and thank our Detectives for answering the call to service.”

“These detectives maintained their composure during a difficult situation and exhibited pride in their work,” said Chief of Detectives James Parker. “Their heroic efforts saved the life of an individual who we are sworn to protect and serve. I am incredibly proud of their swift actions and commend them on a job well done.”

Captain Toro noted, “Our detectives answered the call for help and rose to the occasion. We are extremely proud of their efforts and happy for the successful outcome.”

Prosecutor Suarez also credited the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office for its assistance while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical services.
