HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Hoboken resident Ron Bautista clinched the Democratic nomination on Tuesday night to run for Hudson County commissioner in November.
Bautista ran as a Democrat to succeed longtime County Commissioner (formerly Freeholder) Anthony Romano.
While both were expected to vie for the Democratic nomination, Romano decided last-minute not to run again.
Bautista may face an Independent candidate in the general election in June, but no Republicans filed to face him.
The 5th District commissioner's seat on the Hudson County Board of Commissioners represents Hoboken and some of Jersey City.

“We launched this campaign last year with a simple goal in mind," Bautista said Tuesday night, "to give power to the neighbors. We ran on building more affordable housing, protecting tenants, and creating safer streets, and we built a broad coalition of community members across Hoboken and Jersey City who are ready for change.
“This was a people-powered campaign through and through, and I am so grateful to everyone who helped us get here. I want to thank my friends and family for standing by my side, the Working Families Party for all of their support, and all the organizations and elected officials who endorsed me along this journey.
“This is an incredible honor, and I’m so excited to be your advocate in county government after we win the general election in November. Tonight’s victory sends a message that the people have the power. Together, we will reimagine what’s possible in Hudson County.”
Note that people could mail in their ballots until 8 p.m. Tuesday, so final numbers may not be known for at least a week.
