HUDSON COUNTY, NJ —Hudson County will fly flags at half-staff in observance of the death of long-time Rep. Frank J. Guarini on Saturday. Guarini died at 101.

His education was interrupted when he served in World War II. He received a Navy Commendation Medal and three battle stars for his service aboard the flagship vessel of the Pacific fleet, his obituary notes.

He served in the legislature starting in 1966, and ended his last term in 1993. Then, Pres. Bill Clinton nominated him to serve in the United Nations.

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy said Monday, “As a lifelong resident of Jersey City, I had the personal and professional privilege of meeting former Congressman Frank J. Guarini on several occasions. He was a true fighter for his district and a dedicated public servant who led with conviction, integrity, and purpose."

Guy added, “Having known his family and friends, it has always been clear how deeply he was respected – not only for his long record of public service, but for the genuine care he showed for the people and communities he represented."

Guy said, “On behalf of Hudson County, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who had the honor of knowing and working with him."

The new Hudson County Justice Complex, which opened earlier this month, is named for Guarini.

Details of services have not yet been released.
