Mayor Derek Armstead does not need a distraction as he pursues a seat in Congress, but he courageously rejected a blackmail attempt by Paul Oliveira, a former assistant Linden school superintendent whose dubious allegations could hurt the campaign.
Mayor Derek Armstead does not need a distraction as he pursues a seat in Congress, but he courageously rejected a blackmail attempt by Paul Oliveira, a former assistant Linden school superintendent whose dubious allegations could hurt the campaign.

Mayor Derek Armstead found himself at the center of controversy following allegations made by a former assistant superintendent of schools whose charges raise questions about the disgruntled employee's integrity rather than substantive wrongdoing by the politician.

Paul Oliveira, the assistant superintendent for academics in the Linden school district for the last year-and-a-half, claimed to have resigned due to pressure from officials who retaliated against him for exposing illegalities.

He was hired as chief administrator at the Academy for Urban Leadership (AUL) Charter School for a 5-year term at a starting salary of $190,000, at least $10,000 more than he made in Linden. That happened on April 5, 2024, more than a week before he resigned.

A lawyer for Oliveira leveled allegations of racism and anti-Semitism against Armstead, suggesting the city official was behind a conspiracy to exclude Jewish people from employment opportunities within the district.

A personnel record check shows that no Jewish applicants sought school jobs during Oliveira's brief tenure with the district. Oliveira secretly recorded a meeting involving Armstead and several school officials, in which the mayor alluded to outsiders.

Oliveira's attorney, Armen McOmber, threatened legal action and a public relations campaign if a substantial settlement of $950,000 was not reached. However, despite the potential political fallout and personal risk, Armstead refused to capitulate to blackmail, prioritizing the interests of Linden taxpayers above personal reputation.

Board of Education President Marlene Berghammer asked police to investigate McOmber's blackmail attempt. Armstead asked Union County Prosecutor William Daniels to conduct a criminal probe.

Paul Oliveira's attorney, Armen McOmber, sent a ransom note threatening to humiliate officials with a conversation secretly recorded by the assistant school superintendent unless taxpayers shelled out $950,000. Linden Mayor Derek Armstead refused to capitulate to blackmail, despite the potential political fallout.
Central to Oliveira's claims is an alleged directive during a January meeting to prioritize the hiring of African American or Haitian applicants, purportedly excluding Jewish candidates. Oliveira secretly recorded the conversation in which Armstead alluded to “guys with big hats and curls.”

Armstead has vehemently denied these accusations, apologizing to anyone offended and saying he regrets if his remarks diminished the clarity of his commitment to diversity and inclusivity in the community.

Berghammer and Armstead observed that the racial makeup of the school staff contrasts sharply with that of the student body. The racial composition of the school faculty is roughly converse that of the student body, with about 70 percent of the teachers white and a similar proportion of the pupils being Black or Hispanic.

In the United States, 79 percent of public school teachers are White and at least 65 percent of employees at Linden Public Schools are White.

Linden Public School District contains 11 schools and 6,064 students. The district’s minority enrollment is 80 percent, and 34.9 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.

Nationally, white teachers make up 80% of the teaching force, and in New Jersey, it’s 83%. Meanwhile, the state’s teaching force — also mirroring national trends — is 8% Hispanic and 6.5% Black, while those student populations are 32% and 15%, respectively.

The student body at the schools served by Linden Public School District is 16.4% White, 32.4% Black, 2.5% Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, 46.4% Hispanic/Latino, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.2% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander. In addition, 1.8% of students are of two or more races or ethnicity.

Testimonials from Linden's Orthodox Jewish community members paint a contrasting picture, portraying Armstead as a friend and ally despite private remarks he made using a secretly recorded conversation, including an ill-advised joke referencing "guys with big hats and curls," interpreted by McOmber as derogatory towards Hasidic Jews.

While regrettable, the remarks reflected the broader context of Armstead's advocacy for local employment initiatives, which have yielded tangible benefits for Linden residents. Armstead apologized to anyone offended by his comments,

Moreover, suspicions arise regarding the timing and motivations behind the leak of the recorded conversation, particularly given Armstead's prominent position in the Democratic primary for Congress.

Attempted extortion can muddy the waters for Armstead's campaign but they cast doubt on the credibility of Oliveira's claims and the demand for $950,000 in McOmber's ransom note suggest that his intentions are impure.

Ultimately, Mayor Derek Armstead emerges as a figure of integrity, standing firm against attempts at coercion and maintaining a steadfast commitment to the welfare of Linden's populace. While not without flaws, his record of service and dedication to community advancement speak volumes, transcending the sensationalism of political maneuvering.

As the electorate navigates through the noise of controversy, the true measure of leadership lies not in flawless rhetoric but in principled action.

Armstead's refusal to yield to blackmail and his unwavering advocacy for local empowerment underscore a rare example of courage and noble character in the realm of politics—a testament to his status as a mensch worthy of admiration and emulation.
