Boulevard Drinks, Jersey City 'Neighborhood Institution' Since 1937, May Be Forced Out

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Boulevard Drinks, a slim restaurant in Jersey City's rapidly redeveloping Journal Square neighborhood, said this weekend that they may have to close or relocate.

"After 90 years of continuous service to the Jersey City community, we are now being asked to vacate our historic home to make way for a new development," the restaurant posted on social media. The eatery, founded in 1937, is known for its hot dogs and beverages.

Journal Square is rapidly expanding with apartment towers and restaurants. While the neighborhood is far from the waterfront, it benefits from the PATH train station.

Mayor James Solomon and Councilman Tom Zuppa released a statement Sunday night saying they will help find a solution.

"Boulevard Drinks is exactly the kind of neighborhood institution that makes Journal Square special," they said. "Keeping it here is our priority."

They added, "As Journal Square continues to grow, this administration is dedicated to ensuring that development deals we negotiate include meaning protections and opportunities for the local businesses that built this community."
