Progressive Democratic firebrand Lisa McCormick warns democracy is under threat from corporate greed, political corruption, and Trump's potential return. McCormick calls for bold reforms to dismantle oligarchic power and restore economic justice.

In a scathing indictment of America's political and economic systems, Lisa McCormick, the progressive firebrand who stunned the political establishment by securing nearly 40% of the vote in the 2018 Democratic Senate primary, has issued a dire warning: democracy in the United States is teetering on the edge of collapse.

McCormick's blistering critique, published on her website, paints a grim picture of a nation besieged by corporate greed, political corruption, and the looming threat of authoritarianism under the potential return of Donald Trump.

"The United States is facing a perilous moment in its history," McCormick declared, "where the very foundations of democracy are under siege by forces of corruption, concentrated economic power, and political incompetence."

Her words are a rallying cry for those who believe the American experiment is at risk of being suffocated by an oligarchic elite that has hijacked the nation's economy and political system.

McCormick's warning comes as the country grapples with the aftermath of a pandemic that exposed the deep fissures in America's social and economic fabric—a crisis she argues was exacerbated by the "corrupt capitalist system" and the "woeful mishandling" of the Trump administration.

The Trump Threat: A Descent Into Tyranny?

McCormick's most alarming assertion is that the return of Donald Trump to the White House represents not just a political shift, but a dangerous lurch toward tyranny.

She accuses Trump of orchestrating a "sweeping purge" of the federal government, flouting laws and constitutional principles to consolidate power for himself and his wealthy allies.

"Trump's actions point to a dangerous shift toward tyranny," McCormick warned, "as he seeks to consolidate power in service to a small cadre of wealthy individuals, further deepening the crisis of inequality and eroding democratic institutions."

Her critique extends beyond Trump, however, taking aim at the Democratic establishment for its failure to deliver meaningful change. Despite high hopes for the last administration, McCormick argues that President Joe Biden's tenure was marked by half-measures and a return to the status quo of neoliberalism—a system she says entrenches inequality and empowers corporate elites at the expense of ordinary Americans.

"Biden's four years in office have done little to reverse the trends of corporate greed, climate catastrophe, and global conflict that threaten to erode democracy in the U.S.," McCormick wrote. "His administration's failure to rein in corporate profiteering, end perpetual wars, or address the fossil fuel crisis has left the country vulnerable to further exploitation by the oligarchic class."

The Oligarchic Stranglehold: How Corporate Power Is Killing Democracy

At the heart of McCormick's argument is the growing concentration of economic power in the hands of a few corporations, which she says has created a crisis not just of economic justice, but of democracy itself. From tech giants to healthcare monopolies, these corporate behemoths dominate nearly every sector of the economy, extracting wealth from consumers and workers while wielding outsized influence over political decisions.

From left to right Priscilla Chan, Mark Zuckerberg, Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai, and Elon Musk, among other billionaires attend Donald Trump's 2025 inauguration.

"The result is not only economic injustice but also a deepening crisis of democracy," McCormick asserted. "As monopolies amass wealth and influence, they can shape laws to protect their interests, while the average citizen is left to face a system that is rigged against them."

She outlines seven devastating consequences of corporate monopolization:

  1. Rising Prices for Consumers: Fewer competitors mean higher prices and fewer choices for everyday Americans.
  2. Lower Wages for Workers: With less competition, employers have no incentive to offer fair wages.
  3. Stifled Job Creation: Monopolies inhibit innovation and reduce opportunities for new businesses.
  4. Crushed Small Businesses: Corporate giants drive small businesses into extinction, centralizing economic power.
  5. Reinforced Racial Inequity: Communities of color are disproportionately excluded from economic opportunities.
  6. Jeopardized Public Health: Profit-driven corporations prioritize earnings over safety, leading to environmental and health crises.
  7. Weakened Democracy: Corporate wealth distorts elections, controls media narratives, and undermines the democratic process.

A Call to Action: Rebuilding Democracy from the Ground Up

McCormick's solution is as bold as her diagnosis: a sweeping overhaul of the American political and economic systems to dismantle oligarchic structures and return power to the people.

She calls for aggressive antitrust enforcement, financial regulation, and corporate oversight to break up monopolies and restore competition. Additionally, she advocates for stronger worker protections, anti-corruption measures, and a reinvigorated administrative state capable of enforcing laws that serve the public good.

"Rebuilding democracy in America requires a reinvigoration of the political process," McCormick urged. "Citizens must stand up to demand accountability from both corporate interests and elected officials. Through collective action and solidarity, it is possible to confront the forces of oligarchy and return the power to the people."

Her message is clear: the fight for democracy is inseparable from the fight for economic justice. As long as wealth and power remain concentrated in the hands of a few, the democratic process will remain under threat.

The Stakes: A Nation at a Crossroads

McCormick's warning comes at a pivotal moment in American history. With the 2024 election on the horizon and the specter of Trump's return looming large, the choices facing the nation could not be more consequential. Will Americans rise to the challenge of reclaiming their democracy, or will they allow the forces of oligarchy and authoritarianism to prevail?

"The struggle for democracy in America is not only a political issue—it is fundamentally an economic issue," McCormick concluded. "As long as the vast wealth of a few continues to concentrate in the hands of corporate elites, the democratic process will remain at risk."

Her call to action is urgent and uncompromising: "Now is the time to take action. It is up to you to demand bold reforms that challenge the power of monopolies, protect workers and consumers, and ensure that the promise of democracy can be fulfilled for all Americans."

The question is: will Americans heed her warning, or will they allow democracy to slip through their fingers?
