Escooter accident drives patient to the ED and Medical School

While visiting New Jersey from California, 22-year-old Tram Huynh fell off an electric scooter and broke her ankle. She sought care at Hackensack Meridian Health’s Palisades Medical Center, where she met orthopedic surgeon Kevin Chen, M.D. Dr. Chen diagnosed her with a displaced and unstable fracture, meaning there was a large gap between the broken bones.
Tram's family encouraged her to fly home for the procedure, but Dr. Chen explained that waiting could cause the bone to begin healing incorrectly and flying could increase her risk for blood clots. Appreciating his clear, no-pressure communication, Tram chose to stay in New Jersey and undergo open reduction and internal fixation surgery the very next morning to realign and stabilize her ankle.
Following a successful surgery and months of physical therapy back in California, Tram is now back to her normal routine, including Pilates. However, her time as a patient at Palisades completely changed her future. Inspired by Dr. Chen, Tram decided to shift her career path from attending PA school to becoming a doctor. She studied for the MCAT while recovering from her surgery and will begin medical school this fall, with the ultimate goal of becoming an orthopedic surgeon herself.
