Firefighters Extinguish Two Fires At Jersey City Factory: City

JERSEY CITY, NJ —A second fire in less than 24 hours at a Jersey City plexiglass plastics factory had been fully knocked down by Tuesday afternoon, though fire department units remained at the scene to ensure all embers were soaked, city spokesman Stan Eason told Patch.

The fires broke out at 230 Culver Ave., along Mallory Avenue, which according to records is the location of Acrilex, Inc. No injuries were reported in either fire and Eason said Jersey City Fire Department HAZMAT reported that air samples taken at the scene were negative. The factory produces plexiglass plastics and uses dyes to color those materials, Eason said.

According to Eason, at 3:30 p.m. Monday, workers reported a small fire at the Culver Avenue location, a partial-two storied building. Firefighters extinguished the two-alarm blaze and secured the building prior to leaving the scene.

But shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, firefighters were called back to the scene for another blaze, where a high volume of flames led to a third alarm being sounded for additional manpower, according to Eason. The spokesperson said the high volume of fire was attributed to a significant amount of combustibles in the industrial building.

According to WPIX, footage taken from the station's AIR11 helicopter Tuesday morning showed that a portion of the factory's roof had visibly collapsed toward the back of the building.

The station reported that some residents do live in the surrounding area, though none were evacuated.

Eason said the causes of both fires remain under investigation.
