Hudson County Teacher Of Year Chosen By State Of NJ

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Teachers rise early, work on their feet, and change lives. This week, the state of New Jersey chose a Teacher of the Year in each county to honor.

On Monday, they announced that Shelly Witham was the winner from Hudson County.

Witham teaches earth and environmental science at High Tech High School in the Hudson County Schools of Technology

The Hudson County Schools of Technology are the county's public magnet schools, including High Tech, County Prep, and several smaller facilities. At High Tech and County Prep, students choose a major, including environmental science.

Witham received a bachelor's degree in solid earth geology and a master's degree in science education from Purdue University, the state said. She also received a Doctor of Philosophy in education from Rutgers.

"Her academic preparation as a geologist and education researcher enables her to bring authentic scientific inquiry and field experience into every aspect of her teaching," the state said..

Witham has taught Earth and environmental science for 25 years at High Tech. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Hudson County Community College, teaching dual-enrollment courses that expand students' access to college-level learning.

Witham has designed curriculum in physical geology, soil science, field research, and Advanced Placement Environmental Science, consistently connecting classroom instruction to real-world scientific investigation.

She is a founder and leader of the Environmental Science Academy, a program that allows students to earn an associate degree in environmental studies while still in high school.

Two Winners In A Row

The Hudson County Schools of Technology noted that one of their teachers won the award last year, too: Chef John Palsi of County Prep High School.

"Dr. Witham embodies the passion and dedication required of a County Teacher of the Year," said Thomas Macagnano, the superintendent of Hudson County Schools of Technology. "She is a mentor who leads by example, demonstrating how scientific inquiry can inspire civic responsibility."

Witham now advances to compete for New Jersey State Teacher of the Year, an honor determined through written applications, video submissions, and interviews with top finalists. That announcement is expected this fall.

The state Teacher of the Year will then represent New Jersey in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
