Beloved Jersey City Bakery That Opened Just After WWII Has Closed For Good

A 77-year-old family owned bakery on Newark Avenue in Jersey City has closed for good, the owner announced, drawing 1,000 responses.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A sweet 77-year tradition in Jersey City recently came to an end.

Juana Perez Monteleone, a member of the family that owns Monteleone's Bakery in Jersey City — founded in 1946 — recently said the business had closed for good, after it initially announced that it had closed for summer vacation.

"Monteleone’s Bakery was started by my husband’s grandfather & has been family run for 77 years," Monteleone wrote. "Sadly due to the challenges on small business today, as of August, we have closed our doors. Thank you to all our loyal customers for supporting us through the years."

The classic Italian bakery is one of just a few family-owned bakeries left in Hudson County (including the famous "Cake Boss" bakery Carlo's in Hoboken).

It was founded by Guido Monteleone, then passed to his sons after he died in 1959, according to NJ.com. Most recently, his three grandsons were running it.

It was located at 741 Newark St.

Monteleone's announcement last month drew more than 1,000 comments on social media.

"Every cake I’ve ever had for 29 years has come from this bakery, and once I had my daughter 7 years ago I continued the tradition," wrote a woman. "I want to thank you all for the sweet memories and for always getting to job done."

"Used to love sharing tea biscuits with my Poppop," wrote another. "They would always bring out the fresh ones from the back for us."

"Wow Dad this was our spot," posted someone, eliciting this response: "I know BABY GIRL."

Some said they had moved far away and still had relatives bring them the cakes and pastries.

And through the years, others mourned Monteleone family members who passed away.

"I love that place before I move to Georgia last year," wrote a woman on a post about the bakery two years ago. "I had their crumb and coconut buns. I love them. The sisters used to sit in front behind the counter by the window. I notice two years only one of the ladies was there, until I was told one of the sisters pass away. But before I left Jersey I did not see the other sister in the store. What happen to her. They made the best cheese cake and spice cup cakes. I have seen no bakers here in Georgia. I missed them."
