Jersey City Schools Start Next Week: See Calendar, Superintendent's Letter

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Public schools open for Jersey City students late next week. Superintendent Norma Fernández posted a letter welcoming them back, and reminders for the new year.

Students across the state will have to adjust to a new state law prohibiting them from having their phones in class.

Some of the holiday schedules will be different from last year. In Jersey City, the first day off this year will be Sept. 21, a Monday, for Yom Kippur, a Jewish holiday of atonement. The holiday of Rosh Hashana begins Sept. 11 at sundown, but school is not closed that Friday.

Students will only have two days of school during the first week of November, due to Election Day and annual teachers' union convention.
