Killing of Jersey City Man Is Hudson County's First Homicide Of 2022

The death of the 32-year-old man, killed around noon in Jersey City this week, was soon followed by 2 other violent crimes in the same area.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A 32-year-old man was killed in Jersey City on Sunday — the first homicide in Hudson County in 2022. Within 90 minutes of the crime, at least two other violent crimes were reported nearby.

As of Friday, a suspect in the homicide had not been announced.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said Monday that her office is investigating the death of Rasheen Bostick, 32, who was fatally shot Sunday afternoon near Crescent and Belmont avenues.

At approximately 12:28 p.m. on Jan. 23, the Jersey City Police Department responded to a shooting in the area of 32 Belmont Ave. Responding officers found Bostick with an apparent gunshot wound to his torso, prosecutors said.

He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:55 p.m. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, the HCPO said.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating this case.

Two Other Violent Crimes In Same Area, 90 Minutes Later

Also that day in Jersey City, a "wild shooting involving two cars" occurred three blocks from where Bostick was found, around 2 p.m. Then, minutes later, a carjacking was reported downtown, according to Jersey City Times.

The death of Bostick was the first reported homicide in Hudson County this year. Last year, 30 were reported, including 24 in Jersey City, NJ.com said.

Of the 24 homicides in Jersey City in 2021, half were young men ages 16-27. Two of the others in the city were domestic violence killings of women.
