Carjacker Thrwarted By Mom, Son At School Pickup, Police In Hudson County Say

The carjacking suspect also struck a teacher who was trying to help the pair, officials said.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A mom and son in Jersey City fought off a man who was trying to steal their Mercedes on Friday after school pickup, police said — and then the suspect struck a teacher.

It all went down Friday just after 4 p.m., according to a Jersey City police spokeswoman.

Around 4:09 p.m., police responded to 41 Tuers Ave. on a report of a possible carjacking, said Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione.

The car had been reported stolen from Newark earlier in the day.

All of the victims refused medical attention at the scene, said Wallace-Scalcione.

The next day — Glen Ridge police said in a social media post — the car was seen traveling through town, and they pursued several suspects inside.

Around 8:50 a.m., police were notified of a vehicle traveling east on Bloomfield Avenue at a high rate of speed, said Glen Ridge police.

"The vehicle was wanted in connection with a felony carjacking out of Jersey City," police noted.

Because an Eco-Fair was taking place at Ridgewood Avenue, police responded to secure the intersection.

That's when they saw the vehicle approaching. It traveled into the opposite lane of traffic and struck a westbound car, forcing it to stop.

The people inside the suspect's vehicle got out and ran, police said.

Glen Ridge police gave chase and arrested one man.

Police from Glen Ridge and neighboring jurisdictions also set up a perimeter to catch the other suspects, but they could not.

A 21-year-old Montclair man was arrested. Charges were pending, police said.

One police officer was injured and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, as was a person in the other car in the crash, police said.

The Glen Ridge Eco-Fair and Arts Festival continued, said police in that town.
