Monkeypox Numbers Released In Jersey City Area

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — There were 214 cases of monkeypox confirmed in New Jersey as of Friday, up from 188 and 175 in the previous two days. And now the state has provided a way to track the numbers by county, including in Hudson County.

As of Friday, Hudson County had the highest number of cases in the state, up from 65 the day before.

The first case reported in New Jersey was in Jersey City, with information released to the public June 20.

In terms of case numbers, Essex County has the second most as of Friday, with 45.

Both counties are close to New York City, which reported 1,558 cases as of Wednesday.

By The Numbers

Unlike COVID, which spread quickly and killed 460 residents in one day April 2020, health experts said that monkeypox is rarely fatal.

However, the virus can cause flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that often begins on the face and spreads to other parts of the body. Health officials are hoping to keep symptoms mild and contain the virus.

The state announced last week that it's expanding vaccine eligibility to include:

• Individuals that attended an event where known monkeypox exposure occurred
• Individuals that identify as gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men (MSM), and/or transgender, gender non-conforming, or non-binary and who have a history of multiple or anonymous sex partners within the past 14 days
