Rain Estimates Rise For Jersey City During Nor'easter: See Preparations, Forecast

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Jersey City is under a hazardous weather outlook, coastal flood advisory, and wind advisory this weekend as a nor'easter is expected to soak the area.

Rounds of rain are expected from Friday night through Sunday night, with the highest high tide in the area at 9:23 a.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts of up to 39 MPH will hit the area starting on Friday night.

Up to three quarters of an inch of rain will arrive Saturday, and up to an inch on Sunday.

Jersey City Mayor James Solomon said Friday morning that the city had activated its storm response operations.

"The city is monitoring the forecast closely, alerting residents through Alert JC, and maintaining a direct line for residents to report clogged catch basins so the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA) can respond before street flooding develops," said a statement from the city.

Solomon said, “Crews have been clearing catch basins all week, our Office of Emergency Management is tracking every shift in the forecast, and police, fire, public works, and the JCMUA will be on the streets through the night and all weekend for as long as it takes. When a resident calls for help, someone will answer and someone will show up."

Residents can help reduce street flooding by reporting clogged catch basins through SeeClickFix or by calling the Resident Response Center at 201-547-4900 so the JCMUA can be alerted and respond.Residents who have not already done so are urged to sign up for Alert JC, the City’s emergency text and email notification system, at jerseycitynj.gov/alertjc.

Safety Reminders If Flooding Occurs

• Do not drive or walk through flooded roadways.
• Avoid low-lying areas and be prepared to move to higher ground.
• If you live in a basement or below-ground unit, be prepared to move to a higher floor.
• Never enter a flooded basement, as floodwater may create serious safety hazards.
• Stay alert, use caution, and check on neighbors who may need assistance during periods of heavy rain.
