Rain, Rain, Hike Away: Kinnelon Trails Call This Weekend

BUTLER-KINNELON, NJ — After two rainy days, Butler and Kinnelon residents may finally have an excuse to lace up their hiking shoes this weekend.

Saturday is expected to be partly sunny and less humid, while Sunday should also bring partial sunshine, although a shower remains possible. Conveniently, one of the area’s biggest outdoor escapes is right in Kinnelon.

Silas Condict County Park, at 100 Kinnelon Road, spreads across 1,513 acres and offers more than 10 miles of trails for hikers, runners and equestrian riders. The routes connect with several overlooks around Kinnelon, giving visitors room to stretch their legs without turning the outing into a countywide road trip.

For something gentler and family friendly, visitors can settle onto a bench beside the picturesque seven-acre Canty Lake or bring lunch to one of the picnic areas. Restrooms and shelters are also available.

“Whether you are a hiker, trail runner or an equestrian rider there is something for everyone,” the Morris County Park Commission said.

The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. With rain falling Thursday and Friday, hikers should expect muddy or slippery patches, wear sturdy shoes and avoid walking around puddles, which can widen trails and damage vegetation.
