After U.S. Marshals Shoot Florida Suspect In Jersey City, Attorney General Investigates
A man was shot to death by police in Jersey City on Saturday night. Press reports in Florida say he was a suspect in shooting his neighbors.
JERSEY CITY — U.S. marshals and police were following up on a warrant from Orlando, Fla. on Saturday night when a man was shot to death in Jersey City, the state Attorney General's Office said.
A release from the Attorney General's Office on Sunday said that the office was "investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday, July 8, 2023, in Jersey City, New Jersey. One male civilian sustained fatal injuries. His identity is not being released at this time.
"According to the preliminary investigation, members of the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force were in Jersey City to assist Orlando City Police Department with executing an arrest warrant for murder and attempted murder."

Media reports from Florida say that a 56-year-old man, armed with a gun and machete, was wanted for fatally shooting a woman, Leonidas Duran, 67, in Orlando. In addition, the suspect shot her husband, but he survived. News reports say the suspect was the son of the couple's neighbor.
The reports say he was shot by U.S. marshals as they tried to serve a warrant.

The Attorney General's Office said, "The allegations set forth in that warrant occurred on Friday, July 7, 2023, in Orlando, Florida. At approximately 11:10 p.m., the Marshals encountered the individual in the area of Jefferson Avenue in Jersey City. Thereafter, the individual was wounded and transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 11:44 p.m."
A 2019 state law requires the Attorney General’s Office to investigate any death "that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody."
The investigation is ongoing and no further information was released.
