A Primer on Risky Behavior!

I love statistics!  Especially when I can use them to bring home a point and help reduce the number of insured theft claims we experience.

Recent insurance industry statistics and FBI data show that more thefts occur during June, July and August than any other time of the year. In addition, a lot of this is due to folks not taking basic precautions when heading off on vacation or away for a long weekend.

On average, 30% of people surveyed do not use any precautions when going away (…and I mean basic, such as deadbolts or even locking the front door). Potentially you are placing all of your belongings at risk during this heightened theft season.

How to Avoid some Risky Behaviors?

  • Don’t tell people on social media sites that you are on vacation and then post pictures of yourself and family at some resort location.
  • Ask a close friend or neighbor to watch your home while you are away and advise them to report any suspicious cars or other activity at the home to the authorities.
  • Lock your windows when not at home, including those on the second floor. 35% of those who experienced theft claims said the thief came through an open window.
  • Would you believe that FBI data shows 30% of homeowners still hide a spare key outside the home?  Burglars are a lot smarter than they use to be; not worth taking the chance.
  • Here’s another frightening statistic…20% of homeowners who have a central station alarm system don’t use it during the day when they go to work.

We need to go the extra mile in keeping our families and our belongings safe from predators.  Preventive measures only work when you use them.
