FORKED RIVER, NJ — A free program aimed at helping students with disabilities prepare for college is coming to the Lacey Branch of the Ocean County Library next month.
The presentation, “Transition to College for Students with Disabilities,” is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the branch in Forked River. According to the program announcement, the event is intended for high school students and their families, as well as students with disabilities who are considering college after taking a gap year or two.
The session will focus on how disability accommodations work in college, which the announcement says differs from the process many families know from high school.
“Academic accommodations for a high school student are often made by the individual in conjunction with their caregivers,” according to the announcement. “However, accommodations in college are made by the student alone, and are different than those offered by high schools.”
Jamie Arasz Prioli, director of Access and Disability Services at Ocean County College, will lead the program. According to the announcement, she will provide an overview of accommodations in a college setting and share information on eligibility determination and how to request accommodations during a student’s transition to OCC.
The announcement states that Prioli has worked in the disability field for more than 30 years. It also says she identifies as a neurodivergent adult with a lifelong hidden disability.
Library organizers said the presentation is designed to give students and families practical information before the start of college. The announcement also states that attendees who need reasonable accommodations should contact the Lacey Branch no later than one week before the event.
