New Cellphone Rules Set For Lacey Township High School

LACEY, NJ — Lacey Township High School has announced a new cellphone policy that will take effect in the 2026-2027 school year, requiring students to keep personal electronic devices off and stored throughout the school day.

According to the school, the policy will apply bell to bell from 7:05 a.m. to 1:35 p.m. From the time students arrive on campus until dismissal, personal electronic devices may not be used anywhere on school grounds unless permission is given by the principal or a designee for an approved educational or emergency purpose.

The school said New Jersey law requires schools to limit student use of personal electronic devices during the school day. The stated intent is to reduce distractions, improve engagement, support positive mental health and create a better learning environment.

Under the policy, students who bring devices to school must keep them turned off, passcode protected and stored in a backpack, book bag or locker for the entire school day. Teachers may also require devices to be stored in a designated location during class.

The policy covers more than cellphones. It also includes smartwatches, tablets, iPads and other personal electronic devices. The school said those devices are prohibited during instructional periods, passing times and lunch.

Families dealing with documented medical, developmental or educational needs may request accommodations. The school said accommodations are available for students with an IEP, 504 plan or IHP. Requests must be made to the principal in writing and include supporting documentation.

The policy also outlines how families should handle urgent situations during the school day. If an urgent matter arises, parents or guardians should contact the Main Office. Students may also contact a parent or guardian during the school day through the Main Office, according to the policy.

Students who use devices without authorization will face discipline under Board Policy 5516. According to the school, progressive disciplinary action may include confiscation, parent notification, detention, parent pick-up of the device, suspension or other appropriate action.
