Ask any husband or wife, "do you cheat on your spouse?" and he or she will most likely say " of course not!" Most married couples will claim that they are completely monogamous. Some of them, statistics show, have had at least one affair during the course of their marriage. But they are probably in the minority. But what about the rest? Are the rest of married couples truly monogamous? Well, that depends on our definition of monogamy.
Most of us define monogamy as having one mate. Therefore, if we are not hopping into bed with other sexual partners, then we are monogamous. But there are certain behaviors that constitute " Low Monogamy". Being unfaithful to your spouse without actually having physical sexual contact with another person.
You know that cute secretary in the office that you always flirt with? Maybe the two of you exchange sexual innuendo or risqué double entendres around the water cooler. Or maybe you two engage in a little slap and tickle. It never goes any further than that. Totally harmless fun, right? Well, not really.
How about when you get together with the guys or the girls and you refer to your spouse in a derogatory way like calling her " the ol' ball and chain" or you talk about something stupid he did at home. That's just locker room banter and perfectly natural. Isn't it? Well......hmmmm.
How about having a boys' night out or a " hall pass" once in a while or getting away for a weekend with the girls? No big deal? Just blowing off steam? What do you think?
Look, when you sign up for marriage you don't agree to be joined at the hip 24/7. That's why they invented golf. But, the bottom line is your spouse should be your best friend. You are not supposed to have a better time without your spouse than with him or her. If you do, then you need to ask whether you should be married in the first place.
