Fourth Of July Fireworks Return To Lacey

Lacey Township will hold a firework show on Sunday, July 3

After a year hiatus for Lacey Township’s Independence Day fireworks due to financial constraints, the show is back.

“Last year, we were unable to hold the fireworks because of the difficulty in raising the money. Exelon has stepped up and provided the funding giving us the ability to put it on,” Mayor Gary Quinn said.

Exelon Corporation, the owner and operator of Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station, has donated towards Lacey’s fireworks for the past two years but last year, the township could not cover overtime for the employees who would be working during the event.

“We didn’t think it was right to spend any township funds on something like fireworks when we were asking people to take furlough days,” said Mark Dykoff, Deputy Mayor and liaison to Exelon. “This year we thought it was real important to get some community spirit and do everything we can to get the donation. Fortunately Exelon stepped up and they always do. They’re a great neighbor."

This year Exelon has donated $10,000 towards the fireworks and $3,500 to cover overtime.

"Lacey’s our host town and we have so many employees that live in Lacey. We’re proud to support the fireworks. Fireworks is a longstanding trdition and we’re happy to be a part of it," said Suzanne D'Ambrosio, spokesperson for Oyster Creek.

The firework show will kick off on Sunday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. featuring entertainment by DJ Mike. People planning to attend should bring their own chairs.

“It’s a great event. I hope the weather will work in our favor,” Quinn said. “Anywhere you are in the township, you have a good opportunity to see the fireworks.”

Quinn also gives credit to the Recreation and Public Works Departments for making the event possible.

The rain date for the event is Tuesday, July 5.
