LACEY, NJ — What started off as a joke Facebook event went viral, and now, is leading to good deeds in Lacey this Christmas season.

A humorous Facebook event titled "Walmart Self Checkout Employee Christmas Party Event" was recently created by a resident set for the Lanoka Harbor store, with a description reading "Celebrating another successful year of picking, paying, and bagging your own groceries while actual employees just stand around and check receipts."

As of Wednesday afternoon, the event has nearly 21,000 respondents. The page is filled with jokes from wannabe partygoers who commented things like "I'm guessing you serve yourself" and "Is it B.Y.O.B.?"

Organizer Andrew Delgado posted on the page that he hadn't expected such a large response and started planning a real party to help give back to the community.

And while Walmart said no to having an actual party there on Dec. 15, they asked that people donate to their toy drive. Meanwhile, Delgado set up an actual event.

Head to the Lacey Elks Lodge on Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m. to experience "The True Spirit Of Christmas." They ask that attendees bring an unwrapped gift for a child to go to the Lacey Food Bank Kids, food for the Lacey Food Bank or pet food/blankets for the Popcorn Park Zoo.

The real party will have hot chocolate and pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will deliver the items on their sleigh at a later date, according to the Elks.

Those unable to attend physically can donate toys to the Self-Checkout Employee Party wishlist or directly to Popcorn Park.

"I'll find a way to throw a banger Walmart party another time…" Delgado joked in a post.
