LACEY, NJ — Richie Etting lived a happy, normal life. He didn't drink and never smoked. He ate vegan and exercised regularly.

But in April, the Lacey alumnus was admitted to the hospital because of severe dehydration. That's when the 26-year-old found out he had colon cancer.

Etting worked six days a week. He coached gymnastics, played organized soccer and golfed sporadically. But his life changed completely when he received the diagnosis.

A GoFundMe is helping Etting conquer cancer. A benefit for Etting called the "Rally for Richie" has also been scheduled. The event will take place at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at Lighthouse Tavern (397 Route 9, Waretown). See below for more event info.

Last year, Etting had surgery to remove a tumor and part of his colon. Within weeks of surgery, he began six months of chemotherapy. He made quick progress and tested cancer-free in December 2018. But the disease began to spread again in March.

"His oncology team thought he was beyond treatment this time," the GoFundMe says. "His surgeon would hear none of that!"

Etting underwent a seven-hour lifesaving surgery. He had his small intestine re-sectioned four times. He has made progress since. A scan in September showed the chemo has been working and the cancer is shrinking.

Etting, however, hasn't been able to work and has to go months without income to become eligible for federal disability payments — the state disability program decided he "recovered" from his surgery, according to GoFundMe organizer Kristie Silva. Fundraising efforts for Etting are helping him in the meantime.
