Lacey Girls Golf Making Strides on the Course

The Ocean County Tournament Champions get ready for Shore Conference Tournament play.

In just three short years at the helm, Nola Grenley has the achievements rolling in for the Lacey Lions. Grenley, the head coach of the Lacey Lions girls varsity golf team, has watched her Lions clinch the Ocean County Tournament crown, as well as the Shore Conference 'A' Central title this year.

"Perseverance and experience," Grenley lists as the keys to success. "The girls also spend a lot of practice time out with their families, just getting the exposure to the game is a big help."

Unlike many other sports, golf is very individual. Grenley does not have set captains, but the senior trio of Nicole Deluca, Savanah Hughes, and Allison Orlasky provide plenty of leadership.

"Prior to being recognized as a varsity sport, we had a club team that would meet twice a week," said Grenely. "The key is just gaining as much experience as you can on the golf course."

Grenley also listed Alexa Leahy as one of her top golfers this year.

With a strong long game, the short game has been the focus in practice.

"Overall we are strong with the long game, there is no right or wrong swing, stance, or grip," said Grenley.

"Our short game on the greens is an aspect where we are always looking for improvement. We work hard on drills on the green, trying to turn 3-putts into 2-putts. Again, a lot of the kids go out golfing with their family's who provide great support and opportunity to gain experience."

High school matches normally play nine holes due to limited amounts of time.

"When we first started," said Grenley. "Just about all of our girls shot in the high 60's. Now, we are seeing a number of girls shot in the low 40's - shooting under 50 is strong in Ocean County."

Lacey will close out their season and gear up for Shore and state playoffs with matches against Moorestown and Barnegat. In previous meetings, the Lions have defeated the Barnegat Bengals but fell to Moorestown.

"The girls have really put in a lot of time into this program, whether it being a match, a practice or practicing on their own," said Grenley. "They have grown close to each other, showing a lot of heart, and giving an extra effort."
