LACEY, N.J. — Lacey police will use additional patrols from May 20 through June 2 as part of the "Click It or Ticket" campaign. The department received grant funding for supplementary enforcement.

Officers around the country are cracking down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national campaign. The campaign utilizes high visibility seatbelt checkpoints and saturation patrols. Lacey police will use marked and stealth-type vehicles, according to Chief Michael C. DiBella.

“Using a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling,” said Gary Poedubicky, acting director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. “In 2016, it is estimated that 14,500 lives were saved nationally by the proper use of seat belts.”

A key focus to this year's campaign will also focus on adults' seatbelt in both front and rear seats. Front seatbelt usage in New Jersey stands at 94.07 percent, whereas only 48 percent utilize it in the back, officials said.

"Please wear your seatbelt regardless of where you are sitting," DiBella said. "It is your best defense against an impaired driver."
