Life-Long Passion For The Outdoors Leads To Unique Business In Lacey
Three local residents start F.R.O.G.
Rob Allan, his brother George, and friend, Joe Court, would be considered “outdoorsmen” and having spent many years camping and paddling, they found they acquired a lot of gear and boats.
“We thought, ‘why don’t we introduce people to the fun we’re having and turn them on to the types of things we like to try,’” said Rob Allan.
That’s what led the long-time Lacey Township residents to start Forked River Outdoor Group, or F.R.O.G., earlier this year, a business that offers kayak, canoe, camping gear and tent rentals, birthday parties, special events and instruction.

“With today’s technology, young people are indoors a lot,” said Allan. “We’re trying to get people back outside and give them an appreciation for their outdoor surroundings.”
F.R.O.G. does that by offering boat rentals at Lacey Township’s lakes in Barnegat Pines, setting up campsites, taking people on hiking, kayak and canoe excursions, basically, providing for all types of outdoor activities with a goal of promoting “healthy, educational and fun outdoor experiences for children, families, seniors, scouts and other organizations.”

For example, F.R.O.G. recently hosted a bachelor party for a group of 10 men, taking them on a five-mile hike and a paddle. The guys had a great time, Allan said.
Just as they started their business a few months ago, they began discussions with the new township Recreation Director, James Wioland. A partnership was forged and F.R.O.G. will be offering an Introduction to Kayaking course through Recreation in the fall.
“The timing was good because Lacey was exploring ways to bring people back to their lakes,” said Allan. “We’ll go over basic paddling skills, safety, strokes and rescue techniques.”
The course, designed for beginners and first-time paddlers, will start on Saturday, September 10 and will run for the following three Saturdays at Lake Barnegat at a cost of $60.
“It’s a win-win,” said Wioland. “From day one, my goal has been to bring in local groups to partner with Recreation. The course will help a local business and provide residents with a kayaking opportunity.”
Those wishing to register for the course, visit the Recreation office in the Municipal Complex or call them at 609-693-1100 ext. 2203.
Both the Allans and Court are American Canoe Association (ACA) certified kayak instructors and are CPR/First Aid-certified.
What’s next for F.R.O.G.? Allan said they’re hoping to launch a canoe and kayak race in the fall. For more on their services, call 609-290-5928.
