Lions Latest: Regular Season Winds Down

A look back at the previous week of Lacey High School athletics along with a look ahead

Baseball: Down the stretch, the goal for the Lions has been pretty simple. Improvement with every game and finding ways to have fun despite the 5-15 record including 3-7 in the division. For starters, the Lions have been able to clinch a fifth place finish, sitting ahead of Pinelands Regional in the division. Hanging tough, the Lions gave the favored Mariners of Toms River North a scare in a 6-2 North win in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament.

Lacey has clinched a berth in the South Jersey Group III playoffs but the odds will be stacked against them once again as they will be the 16th seed taking on top-seeded Hammonton. That game will be Monday at 4 p.m. and on the road. As of Sunday afternoon, it is the last game schedule of the season.

Softball: After a four game losing streak, the Lady Lions earned a feel-good win over Southern Regional. Cassondra Zinati picked up the win for the Lions striking out four. All nine runs for Lacey in the 9-5 thrashing were scored in the first four innings, including a five-run fourth inning. Jenna Attello and Paula Szczytinski both had doubles in the win.

The Lady Lions clinched a berth in the SJIII Tournament as an 11th seed and will travel to 6th seeded Delsea on Tuesday at 4:00 PM for their opening round playoff game.

Boys Lacrosse: The Lions picked up their second win of the season, this time over Long Branch 18-0 a few weeks ago. It was their second win in five games, along with a 7-6 thrilling win over Jackson Liberty. Since, the Lions have dropped three in a row to close out the season, including a tight 7-5 loss against St. Rose and a 13-8 loss to Neptune.
