Planning Board To Hear Wind Farm Substation In Lacey Next Month

LACEY, NJ — Next month, the Lacey Planning Board will hear an application for an electrical substation that will be used to receive power from the offshore wind farm planned off the coast of South Jersey.

The substation, part of the controversial Ocean Wind 1 project by Danish energy company Ørsted, is planned at the former Oyster Creek power plant. It will connect the offshore energy to the energy grid on land.

At a recent meeting, the board approved Ørsted's application for technical completeness.

At the next meeting on Sept. 12, the project's engineer will share testimony on the project and the board will ask questions. Members of the public are also able to ask questions and comment on the project.

Though some members of the board voiced environmental concerns regarding offshore wind, this application is purely for the substation being built in Lacey, and not the actual wind turbines, which are planned to be built off the coast of Ocean City.

The Lacey Planning Board will meet again on Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lacey Township Municipal Building.
