Tips For Photographing Fireworks

Things to keep in mind while trying to photograph fireworks.

First of all, this is not a tutorial on how to take pictures of fireworks. I read some of those and they don't work all of the time because you are shooting a live event that comes with all sort of variables. We are a day away from the start of our firework season, so now is the time to decide if we are going to attempt pictures. In order to capture some good moments, we must make sure our battery is charged.

Manual settings are best to capture good shots and I always keep my flash off. I read an article where someone was saying to use a tripod, but some locations won't allow for this. Because of the crowds, it is easier to move around without one. Most people use a digital camera or cell phone nowadays, however I prefer an actual camera over a phone.

I utilize a Sony Alpha and always have the flash turned off for fireworks. Timing is everything because the rockets are launched at different speeds and time intervals. Catching the explosion just right can get you some very artistic photographs, which you can appreciate better once downloading them on to a computer. If you are manually adjusting everything, a good rule of thumb is the lower the better. You are shooting from a dark space into a dark canvas with the only illumination being the fireworks.

It is always recommended to arrive at your event early so you can scout out your location. You should do this after determining where the launch area is going to be. If you have a setting where you can fire off a number of shots with one click, use it. Always be aware of your surroundings, because others aren't looking out for your equipment.

A zoom lens is nice but not necessary. Try capturing the rockets going up first to get your proper timing for future shots. This should be done because the dark surroundings will be slowing down your lens speed. Don't pay any attention to someone who says you are doing it wrong, because I have gotten some great shots in the past by doing something wrong. Most of all, have fun!!!!
