LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Toms River man was in critical condition Wednesday after the car he was driving ran off the road and overturned, Lakewood police said.
The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. at on East 7th Street near New York Avenue, Capt. LeRoy Marshall said.
Police found a 2023 Hyundai Elantra on its passenger side and the driver, a 20-year-old man from Toms River, trapped inside, he said.
Officers were able to get him out and started rendering aid until EMS arrived and took him to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
The man suffered serious injuries and was in critical condition Wednesday morning, Marshall said.
The driver was headed west on East 7th Street when the Hyundai left the road and hit a utility pole. It kept going across the front lawn of a home and hit a parked vehicle before rolling onto its side, he said.
"At this time, there are no indications that impairment was a contributing factor in the crash," Marshall said.
The Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is investigating.
