LAKEWOOD, NJ — The Lakewood Police Department is reminding residents of updated New Jersey laws governing bicycles and e-bikes, including new requirements that took effect for electric bike riders.
Under the updated rules, e-bike riders are now subject to licensing, registration and insurance requirements, as well as age restrictions and mandatory helmet use. The changes are intended to improve safety for riders and others sharing the road.
Motorists are also reminded of New Jersey's Safe Passing Law, which requires drivers to move over when possible and provide at least four feet of clearance when passing cyclists and other vulnerable road users. If four feet of clearance cannot be provided, drivers must slow down and be prepared to stop until it is safe to pass.
Complete details on licensing, registration and safety requirements are available at the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission's E-Bike Information Center at nj.gov/mvc/vehicletopics/ebike.htm.
