Lakewood Police, Schools Carry Special Olympics Flame Of Hope Through Township

Officers, staff, and students from Lakewood Public Schools and Ocean Academy Charter High School participated in the Torch Run.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — Lakewood police officers, school staff, and students joined forces Friday to carry the Special Olympics Flame of Hope through the township as part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Jersey.

The Lakewood Police Department, Lakewood Public Schools, and Ocean Academy Charter High School received the flame from Jackson Township Police Department and carried it through Lakewood before passing it to Howell Township Police Department.

The Torch Run is a statewide relay that raises awareness and funds for Special Olympics athletes while promoting inclusion and community spirit.

That evening, members of the Lakewood Police Department's School Resource Officer Unit attended the Opening Ceremonies at The College of New Jersey in Ewing to help kick off a weekend of athletic competition for Special Olympics New Jersey athletes.

The event was supported by several local sponsors who provided food donations, including Lakewood PBA Local #71, the Lakewood Police Foundation, Baron's Bagels of Brick, Dunkin' Donuts of Jackson, and Sodexo.
