LAKEWOOD, NJ — New Jersey American Water (NJAW), through its contractor CDM Smith, is currently canvassing homes in Lakewood's Downtown and North Lake Drive areas to identify properties that may require lead service line replacement.

The effort is focused on homes within Census Tracts 7153.04 and 7154.04 and is part of NJAW's Lead Service Line Replacement Program, which complies with a 2021 New Jersey law requiring all water providers to identify and replace lead and galvanized steel service lines by 2031.

A service line is the pipe that carries water from the main beneath the street into a home or building and includes both the utility-owned and property owner-owned portions of the line.

Residents can participate by submitting photos of their water service pipe to New Jersey American Water for identification or by scheduling a free, in-person inspection at a convenient time.

The utility has been sending multilingual informational materials to potentially affected customers explaining both options.

Authorized canvassers may also visit designated properties to assist homeowners. The inspections are free and typically take about 15 minutes to complete.
