Apparent Human Remains Found After Lakewood House Fire, Police Say
Lakewood Police said they are investigating "what appear to be human remains" in the rubble of a weekend house fire.
LAKEWOOD, NJ β Lakewood Police announced they are investigating the discovery of apparent human remains after a house fire last Saturday.
Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith, the investigations commander, said in a media release that the fire happened Saturday evening on Chestnut Street.
"I can confirm that we are investigating the discovery of what appear to be human remains" in the rubble of the home, he said on Friday afternoon.

The investigation is ongoing, and police did not release additional information in the initial release.
The Lakewood Scoop reported that the fire broke out around 7 p.m. Saturday in an abandoned structure on Chestnut, between Route 9 and Tiffany Street. The report said firefighters were searching for any squatters in the abandoned structure.
