Black Bear Roaming Around Lakewood: Police

Lakewood police say the bear has been seen twice Friday and they are urging people to stay away from the bear if they see it.

LAKEWOOD, NJ β€” Lakewood police are urging residents to be aware after a black bear was seen in the area of Georgian Court University on Friday.

Police said the bear was seen around North Lake Drive near the lake in the morning.

In the afternoon, police said the bear had been seen in the area of Healthcare Way between New Hampshire and Towbin avenues.

"Use caution and keep your distance. Do NOT attempt to feed," police said.

People should not leave garbage cans out longer than necessary and should bring their pets inside.

"The most common bear problem New Jersey's residents experience is black bears getting into their garbage," the state Division of Fish and Wildlife says on its black bear information webpage. "Bears are attracted to neighborhoods by garbage odors, so properly securing your garbage is one of the best ways to prevent bears from becoming a nuisance in your community."
