Barricaded Armed Man Surrenders In Jackson: Reports

The man surrendered peacefully Wednesday night, police said.

JACKSON, NJ — A man who barricaded himself in a shed with a shotgun surrendered Wednesday night after a standoff that lasted for more than seven hours, according to a report.

The man, who had a loaded, double-barrel shotgun, was expected to face a charge of attempted murder on Thursday, the Asbury Park Press reported.

Jackson police, who had been posting updates on Facebook, said in a 9 p.m. update that the man had been taken into custody.

Neighbors in the immediate area of the home were evacuated, according to Lakewood News Network.

The standoff prompted authorities to ask people to avoid the area of North Hope Chapel Road and New Central Avenue, not far from the Jackson-Lakewood border.

Jackson Police posted a message to social media that said the incident prompted a shelter-in-place order at Jackson Liberty High School as a precaution. The high school was used as a staging area for emergency services, police said.

The incident was isolated to a single home on New Central Avenue, Jackson Sgt. George Vidalis said in an update on the Jackson Police Department's Facebook page.

"As a precaution, there is a police presence at the Jackson Liberty High School to ensure the safety of any students who have remained for any afterschool activities," Vidalis said. Students who need to be picked up should be met at the bus ramp at the school from the East Veterans Highway entrance, he said.

No other details are being released about the circumstances of the incident at this time, police said.

A witness told Patch there are police from Manchester and Lakewood assisting and SWAT officers have been called in, and Vidalis confirmed Jackson police have been joined by other agencies.
