Lakewood Man Charged With Attempted Murder In Jackson Shootings

Two men remain hospitalized from the shooting early Sunday; "the investigation is far from over," the prosecutor said.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Lakewood man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder in the shooting in Jackson early Sunday that sent two men to the hospital, the Ocean County prosecutor's office announced.

Maleek D. Dorsey, 27, of Lakewood, was arrested Monday night at a residence in Lakewood by the Lakewood Township SWAT team, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said, connection with the shooting at Jackson Crossing shopping plaza at the corner of South Hope Chapel Road and East Veterans Highway in Jackson.

Two men, ages 20 and 44, were injured in the shooting that happened about 2 a.m. Sunday during a disturbance at an event being held at the plaza, police said. The men were taken to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus and later transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where they remain hospitalized in stable condition, Billhimer said.

Jackson police received multiple 911 calls for gunshots being fired, and as they were securing the scene, were notified by Lakewood police about the two men who had been taken to the hospital in Lakewood with gunshot wounds.

An investigation by the prosecutor’s office Major Crime Unit and Jackson detectives identified Dorsey as a participant in the shooting, Billhimer said, and he was arrested when a search warrant was executed at the Lakewood residence.

"This is investigation is far from over," Billhimer said. Anyone who has more information is asked to contact Detective Brant Uricks of the prosecutor’s office at 732-929-2027.

"This remains an active and ongoing investigation," he said.

Dorsey is charged with two counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon and is being held at the Ocean County Jail awaiting a detention hearing.
