Lakewood Man In Wheelchair Killed While Crossing Route 9

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Lakewood man was killed early Friday morning when his wheelchair was hit by an SUV while he was crossing Route 9, police said.

Frederick Gillette, 58, was hit shortly before 12:30 a.m., Lakewood Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith said. Gillette died at the scene after suffering significant traumatic injuries, he said.

Gillette was crossing Route 9 at John Street when he was hit by a 2003 GMC Yukon that was northbound on the road, Staffordsmith said.

The driver of the Yukon, a 47-year-old Lakewood man whose name was not released, stayed at the scene of the crash and Staffordsmith said the driver is working with officials.

The investigation is continuing and Staffordsmith said additional information will be released when it is available.
