Lost Man Shot After Pulling Into Lakewood Complex: Police

The man was driving to Toms River when he got lost, he told police. He was able to drive himself to the hospital, police said.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Monmouth County man was shot Sunday when he got lost and pulled into a shopping center in Lakewood, police said Monday.

Lakewood police were called about 10 p.m. to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick, where a man had come in with gunshot injuries, Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.

The 27-year-old man from Asbury Park told police he was driving to Toms River when he got lost and pulled into the Westgate complex, off East Veterans Highway, Staffordsmith said.

The man told police that once he was in the complex, he was approached by a person he did not know, and the person fired at least one gunshot into his car, and he was hit in both arms, Staffordsmith said.

The victim fled and drove himself to Ocean University Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries, Staffordsmith said.

The victim told police the suspect ran off as well.
