LAKEWOOD, NJ — The Lakewood Police Department will be using a new emergency alert system beginning Jan. 1, the police department announced.

The new system is Command Central Notify, which is operated through Motorola.

People can sign up for the new system and choose which alerts they want to receive, including police alerts, public health, public service announcements, weather alerts and alerts when the utilities are out unexpectedly.

The new system takes effect New Year's Day.
