$7,500 In Heroin Seized; Mercer County Man Arrested: Prosecutor

Raheem Cooper was arrested following a 4-month investigation.

A Mercer County man has been arrested and $7,500 in heroin has been seized following a four-month investigation, Acting Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said on Tuesday.

Raheem Cooper, 34, is charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with the intent to distribute, possession with the intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, possession with the intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public facility, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, resisting arrest and escape.

He was arrested while leaving his apartment on Monmouth Street in Trenton just before 6 p.m. on Sept. 15, police said.

Police attempted to take him into custody, but while handcuffed and placed against the arrest vehicle, he leaned away and began running down Tyler Street, police said.

Pursuing officers were able to capture him quickly, according to police. They say he had $1,001 in cash and about five grams of marijuana on him at the time of his arrest.

During an ensuing warrant search of his apartment, police say they recovered 15 bricks of heroin worth about $7,500. His 2007 Mercedes Benz S-550 was also seized as drug proceeds.

Cooper is free on $150,000 bail.

The investigation was conducted by the Mercer County Narcotics Task Force, under the command of Lt. James Francis. Officers with the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, the New Jersey State Police, and the Hamilton and Trenton police assisted.
