LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — A 21-year-old Lawrence Township man has been arrested after police say he struck a boy on a bicycle head-on while riding a gas-powered dirt bike on a Lawrence Road sidewalk, leaving the young rider with serious injuries.
Keith Terwilliger was charged with assault by auto, a fourth-degree crime, and issued seven motor vehicle summonses following the April 14 collision, Lawrence Police Chief Kevin Reading said Tuesday.
Officers responded to the area of 2083 Lawrence Road at approximately 8:08 p.m. after receiving a report of a pedestrian struck, police said. An investigation determined Terwilliger was traveling northbound on the southbound sidewalk when he collided head-on with a boy who was riding his bicycle southbound on the same sidewalk.
The boy suffered serious injuries and was taken to Capital Health Regional Hospital before being transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for further care, Reading said Terwilliger reported no injuries.
In addition to the criminal charge, Terwilliger was cited for reckless driving, careless driving, operating an unregistered vehicle, driving without a license, driving on a sidewalk, improper speed on a sidewalk and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was processed and released on a complaint summons pending a court appearance.
