LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — Trenton Water Works (TWW) will begin implementing new water rates on October 2, with Lawrence Township customers seeing the changes reflected on their bills as their regularly scheduled billing cycles occur, the utility announced.
Because TWW serves customers across multiple billing cycles throughout its five-municipality service area, not every customer will receive a bill reflecting the new rates immediately after October 2. Bills will be updated as each cycle is processed.
Under the new rate schedule, the quarterly fixed service charge for the most common residential meter sizes (5/8-inch and 3/4-inch) will be $83.20. Water consumption will be billed at $2.22 per CCF for the first 15 CCF each quarter and $3.33 per CCF thereafter. A typical residential customer using about 12 CCF per quarter will pay approximately $109.84 each quarter.
The new rates, approved by the Trenton City Council in February 2026, are intended to provide the revenue needed to maintain and modernize the TWW system, which serves approximately 217,000 residents in Trenton, Ewing Township, Hamilton Township, Hopewell Township and Lawrence Township.
The funding will support continued investment in aging infrastructure, lead service line replacement, water treatment facilities, system reliability, regulatory compliance and customer service improvements.
Revenue from the new rates will help fund TWW's $763 million Capital Improvement Plan, which includes replacing the Pennington Avenue Reservoir and Central Pumping Station, continuing lead service line replacement, upgrading water mains and valves, modernizing the water filtration plant on Route 29 South in Trenton, expanding smart meter technology, and other improvements aimed at strengthening system reliability, improving water quality and protecting public health.
Most capital projects will be financed through low-interest New Jersey Infrastructure Bank financing, with customer rates supporting repayment over time.
Although the new rates became effective upon their adoption earlier this year, implementation was delayed until October to allow time for customer outreach, billing system updates, the introduction of a new customer-centric bill design, and a coordinated rollout across all billing cycles.
