Water Main Break Prompts Boil Water Advisory In Lawrence, Ewing

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — Trenton Water Works has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for portions of Lawrence Township and Ewing Township, effective Tuesday, Aug. 4, after a water main break caused a temporary drop in water pressure across parts of the system.

A 16-inch water main broke on Olden Avenue in Ewing, according to Lawrence Township. As a precaution, and at the direction of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, residents in the affected area are advised to boil tap water before using it.

Residents should bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and let it cool before drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing fruits and vegetables, or preparing baby formula, according to the township. Bottled water may be used instead. Officials also advised residents not to swallow water while showering and to provide pets with boiled and cooled water.

The advisory applies to portions of Lawrence and Ewing generally bounded by North Olden Avenue, Glen Mawr Drive, Glen Clair Drive, Central Avenue, Green Lane, Ewingville Road, Eggert Crossing Road, Lawrenceville Road, Fairfield Avenue, Princeton Avenue, Calhoun Street, Pennington Avenue and Parkway Avenue, according to Lawrence Township. Ewing Township described the affected area as extending from Green Lane and Eggerts Crossing Road to Princeton Avenue and the Trenton border. Residents can check a map provided by the township to confirm whether their address falls within the boundary.

The advisory will remain in effect until Trenton Water Works completes laboratory testing, a process that typically takes about 24 hours, and confirms the water is safe to drink, according to Lawrence Township.

Separately, Ewing Township reported a second water main break along Olden Avenue between Parkside Avenue and Pennington Road. Businesses in that stretch will be without water until at least Wednesday morning, and that section of Olden Avenue is currently closed, the township said. Trenton Water Works expects to begin repairs Wednesday morning, and the northbound lanes of Olden Avenue in that area are expected to reopen at that time, according to Ewing.

Ewing Township said it is urging Trenton Water Works to provide a timely resolution to both issues and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
