TRENTON, NJ — The City of Trenton confirmed Tuesday that members of the New Jersey State Police were at City Hall in connection with an investigation into alleged misconduct by a former city employee, according to a statement from the mayor's office.
The city said the investigation concerns a matter it identified, investigated and referred to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office approximately two years ago.
According to the statement, allegations concerning an employee in the city's Housing and Economic Development Department came to the administration's attention in 2024, prompting an internal investigation. The employee separated from city employment that year, and the city referred the matter and its findings to the Attorney General's Office for further investigation and any appropriate action.
The city said it will cooperate fully with the state's investigation.
"This Administration has zero tolerance for misconduct or violations of the public trust," Mayor W. Reed Gusciora said in the statement. "When credible allegations of wrongdoing come to our attention, we investigate them and, where appropriate, refer the matter to the proper law enforcement authorities. That is exactly what the City did here."
The city said it has made referrals to appropriate prosecutorial authorities on multiple occasions when circumstances warranted and will continue to do so when there is credible evidence of wrongdoing.
