"Dolor?"

This poem is about my experiences shadowing a local clinic in Ewing. It's an inspiring story in regards to overcoming healthcare barriers.

A doctor with an Eastern European heritage.
A mother and her son with a Central American lineage.
Two distinct worlds meeting in a sterile clinic.

I see the look of unease linger on her face.
The wax paper crinkles beneath her as she shifts her weight from side to side.
The room falls silent—the patient unable to speak her feelings.
Rather, unable to speak in the same tongue.

Her son sits in the chair adjacent to her.
But he is more than her son,
he is a bridge forced to span both worlds.

I watch as his young voice translates the doctor's jargon into a palatable explanation in Spanish.
The tension in his mother's eyes fades,
replaced instead by a quiet comfort.

The doctor senses this shift.
She saves the boy from carrying the weight alone,
carefully switching out "pain?" for "dolor?"

A small chuckle escapes from the mother.
But not a dry, customary chuckle.
Instead, one whose volume evokes a sense of relief.

One word.
Nothing grand.
No monologues.
Yet it carried an understanding that reshaped the room.

At once the bridge dissolved.
With the heavy burden lifted from the son's shoulders,
the cold office became a place where everyone belonged.

What is often perceived as a barrier or obstacle
is really a gateway to connection and compassion.
Weaving empathy into the fabric of healthcare,
medicine can promote solidarity despite all odds.

The health of youth rests on the willingness to listen, to adapt, and to heal.
Where children are free to be children,
simply because someone cared enough to learn one word.
