Lawrence Township Customers To See Temporary Water Supplier Switch

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — Water customers in the Princeton Pike/Lenox Drive area of Lawrence Township will see a temporary switch in their water supplier starting Friday night, Trenton Water Works announced.

The switch will allow a contractor to connect a 24-inch water main to the Trenton Water Works distribution system. Customers will temporarily receive water from New Jersey American Water instead of Trenton Water Works during the work.

The work is scheduled to begin at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday. The temporary change in water supply is expected to begin at approximately 10 p.m. Friday and continue until approximately 10 a.m. Saturday, for a total duration of about 12 hours.

During the work, New Jersey American Water will temporarily back-feed the affected water main from its Central System to maintain service while the contractor completes the transition, according to Trenton Water Works. Little to no interruption in water service is anticipated.

"Maintaining reliable water service while this important infrastructure work is completed is our priority," said Michael Walker, Trenton Water Works' chief of communications and public outreach. "We are notifying affected customers in advance, and we are taking the additional step of directly contacting sensitive customers, such as dialysis centers, so they have the information they need to prepare for the temporary change in water supply. This is a short-term transition, and we anticipate little to no interruption in water service."

The affected area includes Lenox Drive, Lenox Drive North, Pratt Lane, and portions of Princeton Pike and Meadow Road, generally between Interstate 295 to the south and Meadow Road to the north.

The water temporarily supplied by New Jersey American Water contains chloramines, a disinfectant used to maintain water quality. Chloraminated water is safe for drinking, cooking, bathing and other normal household uses, but chloramines must be removed from water used for kidney dialysis and aquariums or ponds containing fish or other aquatic life.

Once the contractor's work is complete, the affected area will transition back to water supplied by Trenton Water Works.

Customers in the impacted area will receive a public notice via First-Class Mail. Sensitive customers, such as dialysis centers, will receive the notice plus a phone call from the utility to ensure they're aware of the temporary change and can make any necessary preparations.
