According to preliminary investigation, a silver BMW SUV, driven by a Hamilton Township resident, was attempting to park in a designated space when the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly after the driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, police said.

The SUV crossed a grass median and struck three pedestrians who were exiting their own vehicle.

The pedestrians — a man, a woman and a child, residents of Trenton, were taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment. The two adults are listed in stable condition, while the child remains in critical condition, police said.

The Hamilton Township Fire Division and Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene. The Veterans Park parking lot was temporarily closed to facilitate the investigation and emergency response.

The crash remains under investigation by Officer F. LaVacca of the Hamilton Police Traffic Unit. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact the Traffic Unit at 609-581-4000.
