Although many view their pets as members of the family, not all holiday events are pet friendly.

While many owners bring their pets to fireworks displays. Dr. Sharin Skolinik of Chesterfield Veterinary Clinic in Bordentown, N.J. recommends leaving your furry friends at home if you're unsure how they will react.

"Dogs that react poorly to thunderstorms will likely become anxious from fireworks as well," said Skolnik.

The most common reaction from an axious pet is attempting to escape or run away. This occurs because the pet is trying to remove him or herself from the loud, frightening sounds.

When pets are left unattended in backyards during a thunderstorm or nearby fireworks display, they can potentially break loose and get hit by a car, according to Skolnik.

"It's best to keep animals in a quiet, dark place to ease their anxiety during loud storms or fireworks,' said Skolnik.

But Skolnik does not condone reinforcing anxious behavior. She understands a pet owner's instinct to console an animal when the animal becomes distressed; however, she adds that petting an animal during anxiety only reinforces the stressful behavior.

"Teach your dog the proper response to a stressful situation," said Skolnik. "Speak calmly, but firmly, and lead them away from the source of stress."

For pets with high levels of anxiety, Skolnik recommends the Thundershirt, a type of canine T-shirt that acts as an all-over body pressure or gentle hug, or discuss with your veterinarian the types of sedation that are appropriate for your pet.
